Solar Panels For Flat Roofs Scotland

Flat roof solar panels, also known as flat roof mounted solar panels are PV systems designed for flat roofs, they have been specifically engineered for buildings with flat or low sloped roofs. Unlike pitched roof solar installations, which are inclined at an angle, flat roof solar panels are mounted parallel to the roof surface.

Typical roof surfaces that are suitable for flat roof solar panels are garage roofs, garden rooms and outdoor garden buildings, flat roof areas of your home such as extensions or buildings where the whole surface of the roof is flat.

Flat Roof Solar Panel Installers

South Scotland Solar Ltd are MCS approved solar installers who can assist you with the installation of solar panels on your flat roof surface.

There are specific types of flat roof mounted solar panels that are best for each type of installation.

Solar Panel Installation On Flat Roofs

Flat roof solar panel installations are commonly found outdoor garden buildings or more commonly on commercial and industrial buildings such as schools, and public facilities due to the extra available roof space. To ensure an efficient and reliable system, it’s crucial to work with experienced MCS solar installers who can design, install, and maintain your system according to the unique characteristics of you roof.

Things To Consider For Flat Roof Solar Installation

Here are the most important factors of installing solar on flat roofs:

Orientation:

Panels can be oriented to face south or toward the direction that maximises solar exposure. This is essential for optimising energy production.

Tilt Angle:

The tilt angle of flat roof solar panels is adjustable to capture sunlight effectively throughout the day. The ideal tilt angle depends on factors such as the geographic location and energy goals.

Spacing:

Proper spacing between panels is necessary to prevent shading, which can significantly reduce energy production. The spacing depends on the panel size, tilt angle, and system design.

Correct Mounting Systems:

Flat roof solar panels require specialised mounting systems to tilt the panels at an optimal angle. These systems can be ballasted (weighted down), attached to the roof surface, or elevated on racks.

Ballast or Anchoring:

Ballast systems are commonly used on flat roofs to secure the solar panels in place without penetrating the roof membrane. Weighted blocks or pavers are used for stability. Anchoring systems secure panels by attaching them to the roof structure.

See below one of our jobs, the design and installation of a flat roof mounted PV system. It has 7 x 425 watt (3KW) panels getting direct exposure to sunlight.

Normally I don't leave reviews but felt compelled to do so for South Scotland Solar. On looking for a company to provide solar panels and a battery, I was recommended South Scotland Solar by several people. I asked 3 companies for quotes and Callum was the only person that came when he said he would and was extremely thorough, spending much longer than the other companies, going over every detail and checking all the aspects of the property. I was impressed straight away with his manner and professionalism and was very surprised how competitive his quote was when it arrived. The detail he provided was excellent and was by far the best presented and easiest to understand of all the quotes. I engaged Callum's services and he gave me a clear timescale. It was a slightly unusual install in a large Summerhouse with a non-standard roof. Prior to installation, some of my requirements changed. Callum took this in his stride and his communication was excellent, repyling to my messages very quickly. He came up with a new plan based on my changed requirements, specifically tailored for me. When it came to the install time, he arrived on time, when he said he would and I can testify to how hard he worked throughout. He is clearly a hard-working person. The standard of his work was first class from start to finish. and cleaned up after himself. In addition to this, he was a genuinely nice person, talking about his young family and sharing a joke or two. It really was a pleasure to have him in my home. In terms of the install, I couldn't be happier and it's exceeded what I had hoped for. It's great to see how much I'm saving! I have no hesitation in recommending Callum, he is top of his class, a decent person, and is clearly passionate about his work and business. If you're reading this and pondering who to go with, honestly, don't look any further, you really won't be disappointed.

Benefits of Flat Roof Mounted Solar Panels

Flat roof solar panels offer several benefits, making them a popular choice for commercial and industrial applications. Here are the key advantages of using flat roof solar panels:

Flat roofs provide ample space for solar panel installations, maximising the use of available rooftop area. This is especially advantageous for large commercial and industrial buildings where space is abundant.

Flat roof solar panels can be tilted at an optimal angle to capture sunlight throughout the day, ensuring efficient energy production. Adjustability allows for customisation based on the geographic location and energy needs.

Flat roof installations are modular and scalable. Additional panels can be added easily, allowing homes and businesses to expand their solar capacity as their energy requirements grow.

Ballasted mounting systems are often used on flat roofs, minimising or eliminating the need for roof penetrations. This reduces the risk of leaks and maintains the integrity of the roof membrane.

Flat roof solar panel systems can be customised to match specific energy needs and architectural requirements. Different panel configurations and layouts can be designed to achieve optimal energy production.

Flat roof solar panels are designed to withstand various weather conditions, ensuring durability and long-term performance.

These systems require minimal maintenance and are easier to access for cleaning etc.

Businesses demonstrating a commitment to renewable energy and environmental sustainability through solar installations enhance their public image and reputation among customers and the community.
